Are you wearing the right contact lenses?
Have you tried and given up with contact lenses? The most common reason people give up on lenses and return to glasses is because they don’t find them comfortable. Comfort can be affected by a variation of factors including: environment, wearing time, solutions, tear film and eyelid disease. Preventing feelings of discomfort such as a dry eyes, could be as simple as changing the lenses you wear. It has been reported that around 12% of people switch back to glasses every year in the UK. From within this number 56% don’t consult their optician before changing.

For most people it could be as simple as changing the solution they disinfect their lenses with, or switching to extended wear lenses to keep up with the lifestyle they lead. The study entitled ‘The Impact of Intermittent Air Exposure on Lipid Deposition,’ was published in the November issue of Optometry and Vision Science and Centre for Contact Lens Research at the University of Waterloo in Ontaria. Researchers found that the longer the eye is exposed to air between blinks the greater the build-up of deposits on the contact lens. The amount of deposits varied per different contact lens material tested. Materials tested included balafilcon A, lotrafilcon B, comfilcon A, senofilcon A, etafilcon A and omafilcon A, some of which are used in the latest silicone hydrogel lenses.

Researchers designed a special model blink cell that would circulate a unique solution containing tear fluids that would be naturally present in the eye along with an artificial contact lens solution.

Anthony Adams, editor-in-chief of Optometry and Vision Science, said: ““The authors are hopeful that this will allow research that could be expected to provide improved comfort in contact lens wear.”
